I am standing in the Great Hall of Westminster. This is the largest structure of its sort, with its cantilevered roof. It’s a magnificent medieval part of the Palace of Westminster and is the only remaining original part that still stands. The rest of it was destroyed by bombs, fires and so on. The House of Commons is very soon going to be taking a very big decision on whether to extend the period that suspected terrorists can be held, up to 42 days. It’s a big decision, and the government thinks it would wise to extend the period. A lot of people worry about the implications. I’m going to support it because I think you can’t be too careful in protecting people against the threat, this unprecedented threat from terrorism. There are a lot of objections built in. Judges have to approve every extention of the detention period after 14 days and Parliament will also have a say and scrutinise the government to make sure that this power is only used in very exceptional circumstances. And I think if the police are saying it could be useful, and it could be useful, I think we have to be prepared to give that power to all those who are tasked with protecting us. It is going to be a very difficult debate; the government may even lose the debate. I think it’s important to have the debate, we're facing unprecedented threat, and it’s really important we tackle it. |
